Adenium Plant (Desert Rose) – Stunning Easy-Care Succulent
Adenium, commonly known as Desert Rose, is a striking succulent prized for its vibrant trumpet-shaped flowers and sculptural, swollen trunk (caudex). Native to arid regions of Africa and the Arabian Peninsula, it thrives in warm climates and is a popular choice for bonsai and container gardening.
Description
- Family: Apocynaceae (related to oleander and periwinkle).
- Appearance: Thick, fleshy stems and glossy green leaves. Flowers bloom in shades of pink, red, white, or bicolored.
- Caudex: Swollen base that stores water, aiding drought tolerance.
- Toxicity: All parts contain toxic cardiac glycosides; handle with gloves and keep away from pets/children.
Care Requirements
- Light: Full sun (6+ hours daily); provide afternoon shade in extreme heat.
- Watering: Water deeply but infrequently. Allow soil to dry completely between waterings. Reduce in winter (dormancy).
- Soil: Well-draining mix (e.g., cactus/succulent soil with perlite or coarse sand). Use pots with drainage holes.
- Temperature: Ideal range 65°F–90°F (18°C–32°C). Protect below 50°F (10°C); not frost-tolerant.
- Humidity: Low; ensure good airflow to prevent fungal issues.
- Fertilizer: Balanced, diluted fertilizer monthly during growing season (spring/summer). Avoid high nitrogen.
