Camellia Plant Camellia Plant is a genus of evergreen flowering shrubs, or tiny trees that belong to the Theaceae family. They are indigenous to southern and eastern Asia especially China, Japan, and Korea. Famous for their gorgeous blooms and lush leaves, camellias are widely used in landscapes, gardens and also as decorative container plants. The most popular species are Camellia japonica (Japanese camellia), Camellia sasanqua (sasanqua camellia) and Camellia sinensis (tea plant) however C. japonica along with C. sasanqua dominate ornamental use. They are admired for their big, bright blooms that come in white or red, pink or variegated patterns. They also have the capacity to bloom during late the fall, winter or in the early spring, when very only a few other plants bloom.
Camellias have dark green, smooth and leathery leaves that provide an all-year-round interest. They are ideal for garden specimens, hedges or as foundation plants. The cultivar of the flowers could be single, semi-double or fully double. They range between 2 and 6 inches in size. Certain varieties, such as C. sasanqua, provide a mild scent. These plants flourish in soil that is acidic and well-drained and like partial shade however mature plants will be more tolerant of sun exposure if the roots have shade. Camellias grow slowly, but they are long-lived with some varieties surviving for more than 100 years.
