Chlorophytum comosum, commonly known as the spider plant or airplane plant, is a species of flowering plant in the family Asparagaceae, native to tropical and southern Africa. It is a popular houseplant known for its ability to tolerate a wide range of growing conditions and its attractive, variegated foliage. 

The spider plant is named for its long, slender leaves that resemble the legs of a spider. It is easy to care for and can be grown in a variety of containers, including hanging baskets, where its long, cascading leaves can add interest to a room.
