Champa Plant (Plumeria): Fragrant Blooms for Your Garden

The Champa Plant, also known as Plumeria, Lei Flowers, Frangipani, and Temple Tree, is a tropical delight that graces gardens, terraces, and living rooms. This small deciduous or semi-evergreen shrub boasts fragrant flowers in various colors – from white and yellow to pink and red. Its unique cluster-like branches create an eye-catching canopy.

Plumeria Alba (the scientific name for Champa) thrives in warm and humid conditions. Whether you’re a seasoned gardener or a beginner, the Champa Plant requires minimal care and offers maximum beauty. Its leaves are leathery, and its sap is milky white. As it matures, the Champa forms a picturesque green umbrella, making it a delightful addition to any outdoor space.

Champa Plant / Plumeria Plant Planting and Care:

  • Sunlight: Champa plants thrive in bright sunlight. Choose a suitable location with adequate sun exposure and protection from strong winds.
  • Soil: Use well-drained and porous soil for planting. A rich potting mix works well too.
  • Watering: Water the plant thoroughly after planting, and then maintain appropriate watering practices as it establishes. Avoid overwatering.
  • Fertilization: Loosen the topsoil without disturbing the roots before applying fertilizer.
  • Propagation: Champa plants can be grown from cuttings or seeds. For cuttings, take 4-6 inches long cuttings from a healthy plant in summer, dip the end in rooting hormone, and plant it directly in the garden or pot. For seeds, fill tiny plastic trays or pots halfway with a rich potting mix, plant the Plumeria seeds with the wings sticking up, and keep the soil moist.
  • Flowering: Champa plants start flowering after a few years of plantation. During the flowering period (usually the end of June), the tree is covered with red, pink, or white flowers that emit a seductive fragrance.
  • Repotting & Pruning: Repot the plant when needed, and prune to maintain shape and encourage healthy growth.
  • Toxicity & Medicinal Uses: Champa extract has antioxidant and antimicrobial properties. It can combat flu, improve eyesight, and alleviate symptoms of health disorders like gout and vertigo. Tender bud extracts are used for relief from diabetes and renal diseases.
