Rubber Plant - Air Purifying Plant for Home & Office

The rubber plant (Ficus Elastica) is an impressive houseplant known for its glossy, leathery leaves that grow in an attractive upright pattern. This popular houseplant originates from the tropical regions of Southeast Asia and adds a touch of elegance to any room with its deep green foliage and tree-like growth habit. The rubber plant owes its name to the white milky sap it produces, which was once used for rubber production. A member of the Moraceae family, this versatile plant is an excellent air purifier, removing harmful toxins such as formaldehyde and carbon monoxide from your environment. Whether you place it in your living room, bedroom or office, the rubber plant creates a calming atmosphere and requires minimal care, making it suitable for plant lovers and beginners alike.

What makes the rubber plant really special is its impressive growth potential and adaptability to Indian climate conditions. With the right care, your compact plant can turn into an impressive indoor tree, reaching a height of up to 1.80 m indoors. The thick, glossy leaves not only look beautiful, but also effectively trap dust, improving the air quality in your home. The rubber plant's striking vertical growth pattern makes it the ideal choice for filling empty corners or creating a dramatic focal point in any room without taking up much floor space.

Care and Tips

Light Requirements: Place your Rubber Plant in bright, indirect light for optimal growth. It can tolerate moderate light conditions but avoid direct sunlight as it may scorch the leaves. In Indian homes, an east or north-facing window works best.

Watering Needs: Water thoroughly when the top 1-2 inches of soil feels dry to touch. Typically, this means watering once every 7-10 days during summer and less frequently (once every 15-20 days) during winter. Avoid overwatering as it may lead to root rot.

Temperature & Humidity: Thrives in temperatures between 18-30°C, making it perfectly suited for Indian weather conditions. Prefers moderate humidity but adapts well to normal household humidity levels.

Fertilization: Feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer (NPK 20:20:20) once a month during the growing season (March to September). Reduce to once every two months during winter.

Maintenance: Wipe the leaves with a damp cloth occasionally to keep them dust-free and shiny. Prune as needed to maintain desired shape and size. Repot every 2-3 years when the plant becomes root-bound.
